Travel In London Without Renting A Car
Even for seasoned international travelers, driving while abroad can be difficult to master. It is often easier and more time efficient to just use London's extensive mass transit system and walk to your final destination.
Travel The Tube
London has one of the best mass transit systems in the world. The railway network is extensive and designed for customers. There are frequent express nonstops to the airports, and the systems generally run on time.
The Underground has 11 different lines. Bakerloo line generally appears as brown, and runs from the northwest of London to the southeast. The Northern Line is a loop concentrated in the east of the city. The Waterloo & City line runs through west central London. The District line, Piccadilly line, Victoria line, Metropolitan line, Hammersmith & City line, Jubilee line, Circle line, and Center line round out the Tube.
There are 270 stations on the Underground, and a few stations served by buses temporarily. Of these stations, there are only five outside of Greater London. Amersham, Chalfont & Latiumer, Chesham, Chorleywood, and Epping are all outside the immediate city limits and beyond the Orbital motorway, commonly considered the boundary of central London.
There are only six London boroughs not served by the Underground, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Kingston, Lewisham and Sutton.
Walking The City
One thing to remember when walking around London is that cars may be traveling in a different direction than you would normally expect. If you live in a country like the USA or France, you are used to looking one direction for traffic. In London, you will need to look the opposite way in order to be safe.
However, when you make this simple modification to your behavior, you can enjoy your car-free visit to London in total safety.
