London Business Customs

For travelers from the Western world, London is an easy destination because there are few cultural modifications that one need make.

In Britain, the main differences are small ones. Firstly, words may be spelled differently. British English is slightly different from American English, and if you have learned American English this can be somewhat disconcerting. However, once you get used to it, it is not an impediment.

Making A Good Impression

The first rule to follow when traveling in London is to observe the same rules of politeness and cordial behavior that you would follow when meeting business contacts domestically. There is no ritualized interchange as there is in a country like Japan; if you are courteous and treat others with respect, then you will always be warmly received.

Be wary of acting overly familiar on your first meeting with a new contact. Although the British people tend to be very welcoming, they do tend to respect distance more than some Americans and continental Europeans.

In addition, be careful to honor normal business hours. This is less of a problem for continental Europeans than for Americans. In America, business hours seem to never end; it is almost always acceptable to call a business partner if something needs to be settled.

In Britain, the pace of business can be more relaxed. Shops, even including grocery stores, may close early so Britons can go home and enjoy their free time. Because of this, it's important to respect your business contacts' free time when you travel to London.

Enjoying London

If you follow the normal dictates of courtesy, then you will certainly be received well in London. Free from the worry of changing social norms, you can focus on developing your business in London and making the most of your time abroad.
